Detailed 6-Day Nyungwe Forest Tour & Akagera Wildlife Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali to Akagera National Park
Pick up from the airport or from your hotel in Kigali in the morning. Visit places of interest in Kigali city like museums, craft centers, the genocide memorial, and others, and then make your transfer to Akagera National Park.
You will either have lunch in Kigali or at the safari lodge in Akagera after checking in.
You will go on a game drive in the late afternoon before calling it a day with an overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 2: Game Drive and Boat Safari – Akagera National Park
An early morning rise for a pre-sunrise game drive to watch the park come to life at sunrise and get a chance to see the lions on an early morning hunt.
Return to the lodge for breakfast, and then head out for a mid-morning game drive to catch up with more animals that traverse the savannah plains of Akagera like elephants, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, and more.
Lunch back at the lodge. In the afternoon, you will go on a boat safari on Lake Ihema. Expect to encounter different water bird species like the common cormorant, egrets, goliath heron, kingfishers among others, crocodiles, and hippos.
Return to your lodge for the night.
Day 3: Transfer to Kigali
One last morning game drive in Akagera National Park and a community visit before you transfer to Kigali city for the night, before your transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park the following day.
Day 4: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
After your breakfast, the safari guide will pick you up and you drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park located in the South of Rwanda.
It will be a long drive of about 6-7 hours with some stopovers like to have lunch and to visit the Nyanza palace.
On arrival, check in at your lodge and have the rest of the day to yourself.
Day 5: Chimpanzee Trekking – Nyungwe Forest National Park
Early in the morning, the safari guide will drive you to the head offices of the park for a briefing and guidelines of chimpanzee trekking after which you will be led into the forest by a ranger guide to trek the playful apes.
While on the trek, be keen as you might be able to spot other primate species that call the forest home.
You are allowed 1 hour in the presence of the chimpanzees after which you retreat from the forest.
Later on, you will go for the canopy walk over the treetops of Nyungwe Forest.
Day 6: End of Safari – Kigali Airport
After your breakfast, you will be transferred back to Kigali, where you will be dropped at the airport in time for your homeward-bound flight.
