Gates of Akagera – Your Essential Guide to Entering Rwanda’s National Park

Akagera National Park was designated as a wildlife protected area in 1932 by the Belgian colonial government, making it the oldest national park in Rwanda and among the oldest on the African continent.

The park is under the management of the Akagera Management Company, a joint partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks who took over the management of the park in 2010.

The tremendous conservation efforts of the AMC have brought Akagera National Park to the front-line of tourism in Rwanda from the ruins the 1994 Rwanda Genocide had subjected it to.

Some of the notable efforts include the re-introduction of extinct animal species back into the park like the Black and White Rhinos and the African Lions.

The park now receives visitors from all around the world.
