Detailed 7-Day Rwanda Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali to Volcanoes National Park
From your hotel in Kigali after breakfast, you will be taken on a city tour around Kigali by your Rwanda safari guide.
Check out the arts and crafts centers, local markets, and art galleries, the Genocide Memorial Center, and the museum.
After the city tour, have lunch and then drive to Volcanoes National Park. Dinner and overnight at your safari lodge.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda
Seeing the endangered mountain gorillas during the gorilla trekking experience in Volcanoes National Park is a one-of-a-kind wildlife adventure.
You will trek the slopes of the volcano in the bamboo forests for about 2-7 hours, spend 1 hour with the great apes, and then return to the park offices for a drive back to your safari lodge for lunch.
On this same day, time permitting, you will visit the Gorilla Guardians village for a Rwandese cultural experience. Dinner and overnight at your safari lodge.
Day 3: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park via Lake Kivu
Early morning after breakfast, you will depart Volcanoes National Park to Nyungwe National Park with a stopover at Lake Kivu for some water activities like a boat ride to the island or canoeing and some bird-watching while on the boat trip.
Enjoy the beautiful scenery around the lake as you learn more about this biggest lake in Rwanda from your guide.
After the activities, have lunch and then proceed to Nyungwe arriving at your lodge later in the day, check-in, and spend the evening at leisure.
Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk
After an early breakfast, drive to the trailhead after briefing at the park offices and start your chimpanzee trekking adventure in the evergreen montane Nyungwe Forest, which is also home to many other different primate species that you may encounter during your trek and many beautiful bird species.
Spend 1 hour with the chimpanzees before you return from the forest. Drive back to your safari lodge for lunch and then go for a canopy walk or you can decide to go for the canopy walk immediately after the chimpanzee trek to wrap up your day in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
Day 5: Transfer to Kigali
After your breakfast, you will take a long road trip to Kigali city where you will spend the night of Day 5 of your Rwanda safari.
A few stopovers along the way at some places of interest like the museum and the Nyanza King’s palace and for a delicious lunch.
Day 6: Transfer to Akagera National Park
After your breakfast at the hotel, you will visit the local market and craft centers in Kigali city for some souvenir and gifts shopping and then transfer to Akagera National Park, embarking on a game drive on arrival in the park.
Different animal species inhabit the savanna park, including giraffes, elephants, leopards, hyenas, zebras, impalas, lions, buffalos, rhinos, waterbucks, and hundreds of bird species.
Drive to your safari lodge for check-in and lunch. You will then drive out towards Lake Ihema for an afternoon boat safari.
Great bird-watching opportunities of water birds, you will also see crocodiles and hippos. Return to your safari lodge for dinner and an overnight.
Day 7: End of Safari
Early morning game drive before sunrise for a chance to catch some early predator-prey action and encounter Akagera’s nocturnal animals like the bush babies.
Return to your safari lodge for breakfast and check out, driving back to Kigali straight to the airport for your flight.
