Mutumba Campsite is located in the far northern end of Akagera National Park, the furthest camping ground from the park’s main entrance gate. Mutumba campsite is a remote public campsite within the north of Akagera National Park. The area is known for its high concentration of wildlife that usually gathers in the areas near the campsite, like herds of the roan antelope and the elands.
Situated on a higher elevation, Mutumba campsite has stunning breathtaking views of Akagera’s big lakes and, in the distance, sights of Tanzania.
The sunrise at this campsite is amazing. As a result of the high density of wild animals in the area, Mutumba campsite has an electric fence erected around it as a safety measure ensuring the campers are safe.
Basic camping facilities like toilets (pit) and bathrooms are offered at Mutumba Campsite. Campers at Mutumba campsite are advised to carry their own camping supplies like foodstuffs, enough bottled drinking water for their stay at the camp, and their personal toiletries and camping equipment like tents, sleeping bags, cooking aids, flashlights, among other camping essentials.
While at the campsite, expect to spot animals like zebras, impalas, elands, roan antelopes, buffalos, among others, grazing just outside your fence. From the campsite, you can take part in wildlife game drives in the north part of Akagera, bird-watching, hiking Mutumba hill, and guided wildlife nature walks.
Mutumba campsite is open all year round to the visitors of Akagera National Park, with the best time to go camping at the campsite being during the dry season (June to September) and the dry months of December to February.
