Location & Access of Akagera National Park in Rwanda

Akagera National Park is situated in Eastern Rwanda, to the west of the famous Kagera/Akagera River, from which it derives its name. This river nourishes the numerous lakes within Akagera National Park, including the expansive Lake Ihema in the Southern region of the park.

The park covers an area of 1,122 square kilometers and is adjacent to the Rwanda-Tanzania border.

How to get to Akagera National Park

You can conveniently access Akagera National Park by:

  • By Road: The park is a mere 110 kilometers from the country’s capital city, Kigali. A 2-3-hour drive from Kigali through Rwamagana will lead you to Akagera National Park.
  • By Air: Visitors have the option to charter small aircraft and fly to Akagera National Park from the airport. Helicopter transfers are also available, and you can arrange for these services with Akagera Aviation.
