Magashi Peninsula – Akagera’s Exclusive Wildlife Haven

Lake Rwanyakazinga shines with an extensive area known as the Magashi Peninsula, where you will encounter a variety of hippos, birds, and crocodiles found within the waters. On the plain Savannah, lions take naps in the overgrown tall grass, while Sitatunga antelopes target moving prey. Black rhinos are calm in the area unless they are disturbed, along with many other species.

Additionally, Magashi Camp has been established to ensure a five star comfort so that after a long day of travel, one may return to the campsite, take a nap, or even have lunch while gazing at the beautiful views of the lake, which is home to a variety of bird species such as shoebill storks, and red-faced barbets, among others.

Magashi Peninsula - Akagera's Exclusive Wildlife Haven

The Magashi Peninsula covers approximately 60 square kilometers, including Lake Rwanyakazinga. The peninsula offers many exciting activities, such as game drives done both at night and during the day to accommodate all tourists. Some visitors come mainly to see nocturnal animal species like lions.

Game drives are conducted in 4×4 safari vehicles rented at the reception, with a tour guide to take you through all the key areas of the park. The guide will also share stories about different species and places in the park to help you connect with the land.

Nature walks are also very enjoyable here since they involve walking behind wild species at a safe distance. With the help of your tour guide, you are likely to track a variety of animals and even reach areas where safari vehicles cannot go due to narrow or rocky paths.

Boat cruises are very popular and are done on different lakes, such as Lake Ihema, the largest lake in Rwanda. It hosts a variety of aquatic life and birds, such as Shelley’s francolin, ring-necked francolin, African fish eagle, helmeted guineafowl, red-faced barbet, spur-winged goose, western reef heron, and shoebill stork, to mention a few.

Hippos stay around to keep company with tourists, but stay calm as they do not attack boats sailing on the water, and the same goes for crocodiles.

Lake Rwanyakazinga, where the peninsula is located, encourages bird watching and boat cruises.

Sport fishing is another activity you can enjoy at the Magashi Peninsula. Since the area has lakes, there is plenty of fish to catch, such as catfish, Nile perch, and tilapia, among others.

The Magashi Peninsula is magical. Take time to visit it.
