Lake Ihema - A Serene Gem in Akagera National Park

Lake Ihema is among the numerous lakes in Rwanda, situated in the eastern part of the country within the southern region of Akagera National Park.

Covering an area of approximately 90 square kilometers, Lake Ihema ranks as the second-largest lake in Rwanda, following Lake Kivu in the western region, and stands as the largest lake within the boundaries of Akagera National Park.

Lake Ihema at a Glance:

  • It is primarily fed by the renowned Kagera River, from which Akagera National Park derives its name. The river also serves as the source for other lakes within the park.
  • Its depth varies between 5 to 7 meters, depending on the climatic season and specific area within the park.
  • Lake Ihema is home to a substantial population of hippos and Nile crocodiles, both residing in Akagera National Park.
  • The lake also hosts various fish species, such as tilapia and catfish.
  • Its papyrus swamps provide a habitat for birds, including the shoebill stork, papyrus gonolek, malachite kingfishers, hadada and sacred ibis, herons, African jacanas, sandpipers, and numerous others.
  • Bird-watchers can spot pelicans, cormorants, egrets, hawks, plovers, and more along the shores.
