Top Game‑Viewing Tracks in Akagera National Park – Safari Routes Guide

The length and difficulty of game drives in Akagera National Park can vary. If you want a short and easy trip with plenty of wildlife to see, choose the Blue Pools trip. If you want to see rare animals in their natural homes, try the Akagera River Walk.

The dirt roads running from the south to the north of the park, especially around the Kilala plains, are the best spots to watch animals. The Kilala plains are great for seeing large groups of grazing animals and their predators.

These routes let you explore different habitats and see many kinds of wildlife. You can also take a balloon safari or a boat cruise on Lake Ihema for different views and more chances to spot animals.

  • South to North Drive: This main game drive follows the dirt road from the southern entrance (Kayonza gate) through areas like acacia woodlands, thick bushes, and wetlands. It ends at the Kilala plains in the north.
  • Kilala Plains: The Kilala plains are known for many animals such as zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, elephants, and antelopes. You might also see predators like lions and hyenas here.
  • Lake Ihema Boat Rides: A boat safari on Lake Ihema lets you see animals near the lake shores and islands. You may spot hippos, crocodiles, and many kinds of birds.
  • Balloon Safaris: A balloon safari gives you a special view of the park from above. It lets you see animals and areas that you cannot reach by car.
  • Night Game Drives: Akagera offers night drives, mostly in the southern part of the park. Using spotlight torches, you can spot animals that are active at night.

The dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, are the best times for game viewing. During these months, the plants are less thick, making it easier to see animals as they come to water sources like the Kagera River.
