Lake Birengero – Explore Akagera’s Bird-watching Haven

Are you a bird lover? Lake Birengero, located in the Eastern Province of Rwanda, is just a two to three-hour drive from Kigali, offering you the chance to gaze at the beauty of nature.

Akagera National Park proudly hosts a variety of species and water sources, including Lake Birengero, which lies in the grassland area of the park. The lake stands at an elevation of about 1,442 meters and is considered one of the shallow and muddy water bodies in Rwanda. It features papyrus beds where several bird species can be spotted from afar.

The lake is home to little bee-eaters, white helmet-shrikes, spur-winged geese, papyrus gonoleks, and purple-banded sunbirds.

As you extend north, you can spot the Tabora cisticola, sooty chats, goliath herons, red-faced barbets, crowned hornbills, black-breasted snake eagles, and many others.

You are advised to carry binoculars to better spot the different bird species, and don’t worry—you can enjoy bird-watching during the morning hours and late afternoons.

To learn about the local ecology and wildlife, consider going on a guided boat cruise. The shimmering waters are surrounded by lush vegetation, making it a perfect spot for enjoying nature’s beauty. Do you want to feel the land of Africa?

Walk by the shores, where the gentle sounds of water and birds create a peaceful atmosphere. The area is well-spaced and ideal for picnics. Pack the necessities and enjoy a delicious lunch in the wild as you take in the beautiful views.

Tour guides are friendly, so take the initiative to ask about the formation of different features in the park or around the lake. Remember, learning never ends.

For more adventure, drive towards the outer section of Akagera National Park and spot the red-headed weaver, white-winged tit, black cuckoo-shrike, green-capped eremomela, scarlet-chested sunbirds, Hildebrandt’s francolin, Klaas’s cuckoo, and many more.

Birengero is strategically located in the northern circuit of the park, about 8 km from Lake Ihema, where you can stop for a boat cruise or film the surrounding animal species, which range from carnivores to herbivores, not forgetting the reptiles that find comfort on land, in water, and in trees.

Other lakes surrounding Lake Birengero include Lake Rwanyakazinga, Lake Kivumbi, Lake Gishanju, Lake Hago, and many others.

Don’t be selfish—tell a friend to tell a friend that Akagera National Park is the best national park in Rwanda.
