Lake Hago should be that place. It is situated at a terrain elevation of 1,258 meters above sea level and is naturally surrounded by various small lakes. One of these is Lake Kivumbi, where the Nyampiki Peninsula separates it from Lake Hago. There is also Lake Gishanju, which serves as a backup for the survival of aquatic life and terrestrial flora and fauna in the park.
Akagera National Park is highly blessed with many small lakes that support wildlife. It is home to the biggest lake in Rwanda, referred to as Lake Ihema. This lake not only supports aquatic life but is also used for sport fishing.
Residents collect water for domestic use, and tourists travel from far lands to feel the cool breeze of Lake Ihema during boat safaris.
These cruises take place four times a day, with the first shift starting at exactly 7:30 AM, the second at 9:00 AM, the third at 3:00 PM, and the last commencing at 4:30 PM.
Ensure you arrive at the starting point on time. This remarkable venture benefits both the park and the government through revenue.
Did you know that such large lakes support schools of crocodiles? These crocodiles often come out of the water on sunny days to warm up and hunt for prey. Crocodiles feed on flesh, so do not approach them.
The most surprising thing is that they live harmoniously with hippos in the water, only attacking them when fully ready to bring them down.
Akagera has other lakes such as Lake Murambi, Lake Murambya, Lake Shakani, and Lake Birengero. On its northern circuit, you will find Lake Mihindi and Lake Rwanyakazinga, which hosts Magashi Camp. Here, you will encounter the highest density of hippos, birds, and lions, making it one of the best places to see such species in Africa.
All parks in the country are amazing, stretching from Akagera to Nyungwe National Park, which is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa, known for hosting chimpanzees and rich biodiversity.
On the other hand, do not bypass Volcanoes National Park, which is Rwanda’s heartbeat due to the great number of mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
Other activities are also available and highly encouraged, such as hiking in the Virunga Mountains, nature walks, game drives, and bird-watching, especially around water bodies and swamps.
