The most enriching area in Akagera National Park is the Rumara Peninsula, surrounded by escarpments, lakes, and vegetation. They provide a perfect blend to the routes connecting to the peninsula, which takes only one hour as you drive through the entire Rumara loop.
Please note that a peninsula is a piece of land that juts out into the water, nearly like an island, and so is Rumara. At the shores, you will gaze at elephants, buffaloes, and bush-bucks that come by to drink water. These animals are always present, and among all species, they are the ones you are likely to see most often, while others may be sensitive or appear only at night during hunting hours.
The peninsula also connects you to other water bodies, such as Lake Shakani, which is a small lake suitable for sport fishing. Fish lovers should not pass through the area without participating.
You can also arrange a bush meal down the slope as you gaze at the zebras grazing on the Savannah plains. Lay a piece of cloth down, or the lodge staff can set up chairs in the suggested area.
Keep insect repellent with you, as insects in Africa can be dangerous. Also, you are advised to take a malaria test before coming to any African country and even visit the doctor beforehand.

Since Akagera is in a remote area of Rwanda, do not expect fully equipped medical facilities with all the necessary equipment and medicine. In case of an emergency, helicopters may be used as a means of transport to Kigali, with first aid en-route.
