Tsetse Fly Traps in Akagera National Park – Akagera National Park not only hosts numerous wild animals but also a variety of tsetse fly species. Since 2013, over one hundred traps have been placed to reduce the spread of these flies.
Flags are one of the techniques used to catch tsetse flies. They are painted dark blue and black, and cow urine is placed in a bottle on each flag to attract the flies.
The traps are infused with insecticide, which kills the tsetse flies when they land on the flag.
After a number of flies have been caught, they are collected as samples to count how many have been trapped each day and to determine which flag has caught the most. The flags are changed daily to keep them effective.
This project has proven to be beneficial, as reports from visitors show that the number of tsetse flies has significantly reduced, making their safaris more peaceful.
However, some tsetse flies are still present despite these efforts. Tourists are advised to always carry insect repellent and wear light-colored clothes when exploring the jungle.
There are rules in place to ensure everyone’s safety, such as staying in your safari vehicle unless you are in common places, during picnic sessions, or at designated campsites.
This helps protect your skin from tsetse fly bites if you do not have insect repellent.
Please note that some roads are closed during the wet season due to mud but are always open during the dry season. Stick to the speed limits and follow the park rules and regulations.
Ask for the correct tracks to follow or hire a tour guide to ensure your safety. The park is open from 6 AM to 6 PM, and by this time, you are expected to exit the park and head to your lodges or campsites.
When it’s time to exit, park authorities will call your phone. If they cannot reach you, they will begin a search and rescue operation.
If this happens, you will be responsible for all costs incurred, whether they used a vehicle or helicopter.
You should drive only on designated roads to avoid damaging the vegetation or getting lost. Do not use roads that are not on the map.
