Visiting Akagera During Rwanda’s Dry Season

Visiting Akagera during the high/peak season/dry season – Do you want a clear view without rain? June to September should be your target, with December to mid-February considered peak months. This means higher fees, but don’t be discouraged, as it comes with a variety of adventures. Some of these include better game drives due to the steady pathways.

Whether in the morning, afternoon, or evening, feel free to explore the jungle with the help of a tour guide. Nature walks are flexible, allowing you to walk while resting in designated areas marked on the guide map.

Visiting Akagera During Rwanda's Dry Season

Since the ground is dry, you can enjoy a picnic while gazing at hippos and crocodiles along the shores.

Please note that the dry season comes with high demand, making the park crowded, so it’s best to book early.

Many visitors prefer these months because they get the chance to interact with a lot more fellow adventurers during experiences like camping, where they share different life experiences.

Campfires are lit to provide warmth since the nights are always cold. Those who book stargazing tours should carry heavy blankets and insect repellent, as insects roam during the night, though not as many as in the wet season.

Tsetse fly traps have been placed throughout the park to reduce the number of these dangerous flies. The traps use flags painted blue and black, with cow urine placed in bottles nearby to attract the flies.

Once the flies land on the flags, they are killed by the insecticide applied to the surface.

Activities such as boat cruises are possible because water levels are lower and calmer compared to the wet season when boat cruises may be stopped for safety reasons.

Sail on Lake Ihema and observe schools of hippos in the water alongside crocodiles.

The question is, do they live in peace together? Come to Akagera National Park and witness this wonder for yourself.

Boat cruises are well-timetabled to accommodate everyone. There are morning rides for tourists staying within the park, or for those who prefer to start with a water adventure before other activities.

Another shift takes place in the afternoon, and the last shift sails in the late afternoon.

Be on time, as the park’s gates close by 6 PM. Beyond that time, you will be penalized.
