Explore Lake Murambya – Akagera National Park’s Hidden Gem

Once again, Rwanda brings you Lake Murambya in the eastern province, located within Akagera National Park. This dazzling lake is cool during the day, but temperatures become very cold at night.

If you have booked lodges near this lake, campfires are usually lit to provide warmth.

Go fishing during the morning hours or sunny afternoons as you prepare for an African picnic under the trees, where there is shade, and enjoy your heavy lunch or breakfast.

There are other lakes in Akagera, such as Lake Birengero, which is found in the northern corner of the park with amazing landscapes and Savannah filled with zebras, giraffes, antelopes, buffaloes, elephants, lions, crocodiles, and birds.

As you approach the water body, you will gaze at a variety of bird species from afar using your binoculars in the safari vehicle.

Lake Gishanju follows the trail, and it will take you only two to three hours to reach this area since it is also found in Akagera National Park. The lake is surrounded by papyrus and is home to species such as reptiles that crawl on the ground.

In third place comes Lake Mihindi, which stands at an altitude of 1,282 meters above sea level and is where you can see a great concentration of hippos.

Lake Shakani is also a beautiful inland basin in Akagera, said to be shallow, which in return contributes to the variety of fish species in the lake, making sport fishing possible.

Some may ask, when should I visit Lake Murambya? The park is open throughout the year, but the preferable time is usually the dry season, when the wild species are always moving around in search of food and water sources. Your tour guide will allocate the safest places to visit and where to stand.

The wet seasons are discouraged in most cases due to the muddy ground and sudden rain showers, but if you can endure this, feel free to visit. Lake Murambya is the best spot for you.
