Experience Akagera National Park in February – Prime Wildlife Viewing Season

Akagera National Park in February – February is a short dry season with little or no rainfall. During this period, the grass is short, enabling visitors to drive along the game tracks where species are easily located by game rangers based on the tracks they leave on the ground.

The animals are ever-present in the open Savannah grasslands, easily spotted as you pass by. Since the land is dry, there is a high demand for water, so if you wish to observe a variety of wild species, head towards the water bodies in Akagera National Park. Be sure to carry enough mineral water.

Temperatures in Rwanda range between 22°C and 27°C, while at night they drop to around 16°C to 21°C, causing some areas to experience frost on certain days.

The country lies at a high altitude, characterized by a highland tropical climate, meaning it receives plenty of rainfall, with the long rainy season extending from March through May.

Akagera is just a two to three-hour drive from Kigali, and you can use road or air transport depending on the days you’ve booked and how long you wish to spend at the park.

The park is filled with beautiful, convenient Savannah landscapes and unique habitats for wild species, such as lakes, marshes, and mountains, offering spectacular scenery.

Akagera is also home to over 482 bird species, including the rare and prehistoric Shoebill, among other birds.

After a long day of game drives, you can rest at one of the lodges such as Ruzizi Tented Lodge, Karenge Bush Camp, Magashi Camp, or Akagera Game Lodge.

The above activities are possible due to the dry land, which also allows tourists to showcase fashionable earth-toned clothing that doesn’t attract insects, ensuring everyone’s safety. Be sure to bring insect repellents.

Visiting the parks is another way to support local communities, as national parks employ local people, helping them earn money and improve their standards of living.

Don’t leave without visiting the local villages to get a delightful glimpse of their culture and survival techniques in the wild society.

Akagera, the home of wildlife peace, opens its doors of joy—don’t miss visiting it this February!
