Rwisirabo Loop, one of the best game routes, is a 35 km journey heading north from the park’s starting point. A sharp right turn will be noticeable at a ridge around Muyumbu Campsite, indicated by point 8.
As you continue, you will encounter the Rwisirabo Ranger Outpost at point 23, offering glorious views in all directions, surrounded by hills that are home to zebras, giraffes, and topis.
The western boundary fence hosts more animals such as carnivores, birds, and reptiles.
After finishing all the activities, turn back and drive east down the valley to point 13. You will come out at Lake Birengero.
If you have enough time, it is advised to stop at point 14, where you will get a chance to spot vervet monkeys.
Afterward, you are free to return south down the lake shore road to point 74. Continue south along Rhino Boma Road for exclusive rhino spotting. At the end, you can turn back to the reception for more adventures.
There are both black and white rhinos in the park. For 22 years, these species were extinct in the area, but to solve this, reintroduction efforts were made by bringing rhinos from other African countries to ensure an increase in their population.
This was a success, and there has even been a suggestion that, in time, they will supply some of their wild species to other countries. Thanks to the government and non-government organizations that have stood up to ensure wildlife conservation.
Rwisirabo further connects to Kitabili, which is just 70 km away. Feel free to visit this area, filled with beautiful water sources where birds gather in the morning to catch fish.
You can also explore Lake Hago and Gishanju. Lay a cloth on the savanna’s green grass and film the surroundings as you enjoy your packed picnic dish.
Akagera National Park is filled with a variety of species and offers activities such as nature walks, where you use your feet to tour the park. Many tourists say that it connects them with the African land. However, ensure that you walk behind your tour guide since he or she can track which animals have passed through the trail you’re on and guide you on a safe path.
You can also go for night drives if you wish to see lions hunting. Lions sleep for many hours to preserve energy for the night, which is why they outpace other species.
Akagera is a home of fun. Do not pass by it.
