Kitabili Loop – Explore Akagera’s Scenic Route

Kitabili Loop of Akagera – Game drives along the northern circuit are limited due to the rural setting, making lodging areas inadequate because most of the lodges are found at the entrance. That is why you have to book in advance to make proper arrangements.

Some tourists may prefer the southern part of the park, but according to knowledgeable tour guides, the northern ends are the best, offering a variety of animal species, birds, water bodies, hills, and plain Savannah, to mention but a few.

Kitabili Loop - Explore Akagera's Scenic Route

There are nocturnal animals that can be seen during night drives while they hunt, such as leopards, bush babies, lions, civets, and various wild cats. These animals spend most of their time resting to preserve energy for their nighttime activities.

Surprisingly, some of these species hunt each other not just for food but to assert dominance, showing that they are the kings of the jungle and no one should challenge them.

Remember, Akagera National Park is the only Savannah park in Rwanda with the Big Five mammals. It is home to 525 bird species, making it a haven for bird lovers. Some of the bird species include the shoebill stork, long-toed lapwing, water thick-knee, African jacana, and white-winged warbler, to mention just a few.

Kitabili Loop covers 70 km. Let me guide you on how to reach it. To cover the loop, it only takes about five hours, similar to touring Akagera Tented Lodge during the wet season. The drive starts from the reception, taking you through Mohana Plains.

Then head to Lake Birengero for an authentic view. Turn left at the junction and continue driving for about 15 km to reach Lake Hago. Moving further, you will encounter Kageyo, and after about 34 km, you will enter Nyampiki Peninsula.

This area takes you through the beautiful Lake Hago, where a variety of zebras, hippos, and impalas reside, enjoying their day.

Don’t spend too much time at Nyampiki since you will need to head north for a short distance. As you gaze at the green landscapes on your left, you will see Kitabili.

Spend some time there, then continue along the loop to the left until you drive via the highland route, which leads you back to Rwisirabo and the Akagera National Park reception.

It may be tiring, but good things are always worth being patient for. From there, you can head back and reflect on your amazing adventure.
