Kageyo Peninsula is known as a resettlement village, home to a variety of people. It is said that during the genocide, many sought refuge in nearby countries, including Tanzania. After the ceasefire, the government called on all refugees to return home.
In 2007, thousands of people were forced to return to Rwanda, with over 450 families settling at the border of Akagera National Park. It was on the side of Kageyo where the government allocated land for them to settle, which later led to conflicts between the wild animals and humans.
The wild species began attacking the residents’ livestock, which forced the people to retaliate by poisoning the wild animals.
To end these conflicts, massive sensitization campaigns have been carried out to inform the public about the importance of wildlife conservation. Additionally, an electric fence has been installed to prevent animals from wandering into the villages.
The easiest way to reach Akagera is by driving from Kigali, which takes about two to three hours. To connect to Kageyo, it is recommended to get a good safari car to help navigate the remote roads in the northeastern part of Rwanda.
In addition to that, you can book a helicopter flight from Kigali International Airport to Akagera National Park, where you will meet a tour guide and a safari car to take you to your destination.
Since Lake Hago is near the peninsula, you can stop at the eastern shores and take some time to gaze at elephants, buffaloes, and zebras. Many animals gather at the lake due to the thick vegetation around the area.
However, when the vegetation overgrows during the rainy season, it can be difficult to spot different animal species. With the help of a tour guide, you will be guided on how to spot wild species such as vervet monkeys, baboons, and impalas that live in the area.
After observing the wildlife, you can explore places near Kageyo, including Buyanja Secondary School, Sante Street Centre, Igihuru Road, Kabare School, and Gahini Route.
As you dive further into the park, you will pass through Giraffe Loop, Rurama Loop, Nyamabuye Lookout, Magashi Peninsula, and Nyampiki Peninsula, to mention just a few.
Kageyo Peninsula should always be on your bucket list when coming to Africa.
