Giraffe Area Loop – Explore the Wildlife Route in Akagera

The one-hour stretch through the Giraffe Area Loop takes you through the northern line as you view different animal species in the eastern part of Rwanda. Turn at Three Pass Lone Tree Lookout on the left, then continue down the valley.

The journey continues to the dam, where you can look out for waterfowl before returning to 5-A Right. As you turn left from your position, you will reach Point 2 to complete a figure-eight turn, where the vegetation changes from acacia thickets to flat plains.

From there, you can return to the reception. Some areas can be muddy during the rainy season, so tourists are advised to avoid them.

Do you want to intensify your journey? Drive past the Rurama Loop, which takes you agilong the shores of Lake Ihema to gaze at impalas, bushbucks, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, warthogs, and different bird species.

The park is home to over 525 bird species, including herons, jacanas, hawks, kingfishers, sandpipers, and plovers, making your journey delightful.

Akagera National Park covers an area of 1,100 km², encompassing papyrus swamps, Savannah plains, rolling highlands, and forest fringes, creating a picturesque park rich in biodiversity.

The park was established in 1934 and became the country’s largest park, home to herbivores, carnivores, reptiles, birds, and primates. The number of these species has greatly increased over the past years due to efforts to end poaching and sensitize nearby communities about the importance of wildlife.

To prevent the poisoning of wild species, an electric fence was constructed to ensure no animals move out, and natural boundaries created by the nearby water bodies help ensure safety.

There are about eight elephants congregated around Lake Ihema, accompanied by 800 hippos and numerous crocodiles.

If you want to spot gorillas, drive to Volcanoes National Park for an enchanting experience, or visit Nyungwe National Park for colobus monkeys and chimpanzees, as these species are not found in Akagera.

The majestic Akagera can be reached by road transport, taking only two hours from Kigali to reach the park.

However, during the rainy season, the roads can be difficult due to muddy surfaces, so make sure you have all the suitable gear for the safari.

This includes sunglasses if you visit during the dry season, jackets, insect repellent, and other essentials.

Akagera is indeed the best destination in Rwanda, offering tourists a safe and harmonious safari experience.
